When I listened to the audio from Christian Bale’s tantrum on the set of Terminator: Salvation, I thought I had heard the end of this outrageous, explosive behavior. When The Mae Shi listened to it, they decided to release a tribute to The Dark Knight’s darkest hour. Titled “R U Professional? (4 Xtian)”, the song is extremely wacky, almost Weird Al-ish (which is a damn compliment in my book blog). Freakin’ <3 these guys.
The second in Starbucks’s Valentine’s Day cover series, Sweetheart: Our Favorite Artists Sing Their Favorite Love Songs includes a powerful She & Him cover of “I Put A Spell A Spell On You” that puts the Screamin’ in Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Zooey Deschanel, the She of She & Him, masterfully belts out this painful classic.
So, it’s finally here: the first taste of Lil’ Wayne’s rock album, which, according to his publicist, is now titled Rebirth and is no longer tied to 2008’s Tha Carter III. The track, ridden with DJ Drops, is titled “Prom Queen”. I’ve given it a few listens, and I’m pretty underwhelmed; lots of groans and ugly vocals, as well as formulaic drum beats and power chords. Let’s hope he’s got more up his sleeve.
“The Rake’s Song” is an extremely promising single for April’s The Hazards Of Love. A filicidal tale of a widowed rake, it swells with an impassioned, morose rhythm. As always, Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy continues to impress with his lyrical prowess.
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, fronted by the beautiful Mette Lindberg, is a Danish, alternative-pop duo. I highly recommend their hit single, “Around the Bend”, which has picked up a respectable amount of steam after being featured in an iPod Touch advertisement last September.
Swedish artist The Tallest Man on Earth, whose real name is Kristian Matsson, is a brilliant songwriter with a grainy, acoustic vibe. Many compare Matsson to an early-Bob Dylan, and, with powerful imagery and an emotive, raspy voice, I can see where they’re coming from.
The track below, “The Gardener”, has really caught me off guard and rendered me a slave to its beautiful story, in a put-on-repeat-for-30-minutes kind of way.
In these wee hours of Inauguration Day, I’d like to take some time to document some of the music industry’s contributions to the victory of President-elect Obama’s victory.
“Oh Happy Day”

In a currently removed post on his blog, Ryan Adams announced his separation from The Cardinals, with whom he has been working for the last four years.
Although I am a poorly educated Ryan Adams fan, due to his fourteen album collection, I do know the kind of Ryan Adams I enjoy listening to: the sad, solo, acoustic kind. So if anything, I take this as good news.
I was going to post this in the original article, but I decided against it, because of the quality. Unfortunately, “Bitch, my booty so soft!” has been haunting my thoughts ever since. This is why, with heavy heart, I must link you to this video of Lil Wayne playing guitar. Hopefully, this release will give me piece of mind.
